Nest Learning Thermostat (1st and 2nd gen)

Google ended support for the 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat on October 25, 2025: no more app, no more remote control, no more software updates. The thermostat still heats your house on its existing schedule, but a community library or a replacement firmware is what gives your own code (or your phone) back the reins.

What it can become

What owners already do with it, easiest first.

An evening~30 minNo risk

Keep your own code talking to it after the cutoff

nest_legacy, a Home Assistant integration, logs in with your existing Google or legacy Nest account and keeps reading and setting the temperature through the same unofficial web API the old Nest app used. It predates the October 2025 cutoff and depends on Google leaving that private API reachable; its own commit history shows it is still being kept alive week to week.

An evening~30 minNo risk

Build your own heating automations

Once the thermostat is in Home Assistant through nest_legacy, your own schedules and sensors drive it directly, instead of whatever the now-frozen Nest app decided on its own.

Hands-on~1 hCan brick it

Give a cut-off thermostat its own server, with no Google at all

No Longer Evil is a replacement firmware, flashed through the thermostat's own USB service port, that points it at a reverse-engineered stand-in for Nest's retired servers instead: self-hosted or run by the project. It restores remote control and a phone app for a thermostat Google otherwise abandoned, but it is young and experimental, and a bad flash can brick the thermostat for good. Only worth it once you have accepted that risk on a device you are willing to lose.
