Hack · Garmin watches
Build and load your own watch face or app
Garmin's free Connect IQ SDK compiles a watch face, widget or data field that drops onto your own watch over USB, no app store review needed to try it yourself.
Build a watch face with Garmin's own tools, test it in the simulator and load it directly onto a compatible watch for your own use.

What it costs
Check the exact watch in Garmin's compatible-device list; you need a Connect account, Java, the SDK Manager and the Monkey C extension for VS Code, plus a developer signing key. Garmin's setup guide lists the current software requirements.
Steps
- Set up the SDK, extension and signing key with Garmin's getting-started guide.
- Create a watch-face project, select your supported device and run it in the simulator using Your First Connect IQ App.
- Follow the guide's Side Loading an App section to build for your watch and copy the resulting app over USB.
Risks and undo
Garmin warns that a poorly designed watch face can greatly reduce battery life, so test it before relying on it. Switch back to a built-in face to stop using the test face; keep the signing key private and backed up, as losing it prevents updates to an app published with that key.
