Hack · Meta Quest
Turn on Developer Mode
A free developer account and one toggle in the Meta Quest phone app enable USB debugging and app installs outside the store, officially, on your own headset.
A headset that accepts app installs from outside the Meta Quest store (a SideQuest build, your own test app) and shows up over USB for debugging, turned on the same way Meta's own developers do it, no unofficial unlock needed.

What it costs
You need a Meta account that belongs to, or has created, a developer team on the Meta Horizon Developer Dashboard, and that account has to be verified first (SMS two-factor, or a payment method other than PayPal), once. You also need to be at least 18, and the Meta Horizon mobile app paired with your headset.
Steps
- In the Meta Horizon mobile app, tap the headset icon, then your paired headset, then Headset Settings.
- Open Developer Mode and toggle it on.
- On the headset, connect it to a computer with a USB-C data cable, open Quick Settings, go to the Developer tab and toggle MTP Notification on.
- When the headset asks to allow USB debugging from that computer, choose Always allow from this computer.
Risks and undo
Nothing is unlocked outside Meta's own developer program, and nothing about the headset's warranty is affected by this toggle; turning Developer Mode back off in the same menu removes the USB debugging and store-bypass access it added. Meta's own documentation does warn that the mode is meant for development, testing and debugging, and that using it for other activities can lead to account limitations, suspension, or termination, so what you install and do with it, not the toggle itself, is what carries that risk.
